Bridges
At A-plus Clinic, we provide dental bridges as a superb solution for replacing missing teeth. By filling the gaps with artificial teeth, dental bridges help restore your smile, preserve the shape of your face, and reduce the stress on your bite.
What are dental bridges?
Dental bridges are prosthetic devices that replace one or more missing teeth. They are secured to existing teeth or implants. A bridge comprises two or more crowns on the teeth at either side of the gap—known as abutment teeth—with one or more artificial teeth, or pontics, between them. The pontics can be crafted from materials such as gold, alloys, porcelain, or a combination of these materials. Why would someone need dental bridges?
Dental bridges are recommended for patients who want to replace missing teeth to restore their dental function and appearance. Bridges help prevent the remaining teeth from drifting out of position, reduce the risk of bone loss, restore the ability to chew and speak properly and maintain the shape of the face. What are the different types of dental bridges?
There are various types of dental bridges, each designed for specific scenarios:- Traditional Bridges: The most frequently used type, traditional bridges comprise a crown placed on the teeth or implants adjacent to a missing tooth, with a pontic positioned in between. They are often made from porcelain fused to metal or entirely from ceramics.
- Cantilever Bridges: These are appropriate when teeth are present on only one side of the missing tooth or teeth. While not as common, cantilever bridges are typically not recommended for placement in the back of the mouth due to the potential for placing excessive force on the supporting teeth, which could cause damage.
- Maryland Bonded Bridges: Constructed from porcelain, porcelain fused to metal, or plastic supported by a metal or porcelain framework, these bridges use metal or porcelain wings on each side to bond to the existing teeth.
What happens during a dental bridge procedure?
The process of installing a dental bridge typically unfolds in several stages. First, the abutment teeth are reshaped by contouring and removing some enamel to accommodate the placement of a crown over each one.Following this, impressions of the teeth are taken. These impressions are a blueprint for the dental laboratory to create the bridge, pontic, and crowns. A temporary bridge is installed during manufacturing to protect the prepared teeth and gums. The temporary bridge is removed during a subsequent visit, and the new porcelain or metal bridge is examined and adjusted for a correct fit. Once properly fitted, the bridge is permanently cemented into position. What are the benefits of dental bridges?
Dental bridges provide multiple advantages, such as restoring your smile and improving your capacity to chew and speak effectively. They help maintain the natural shape of your face, ensure even distribution of bite forces by replacing missing teeth, and prevent the remaining teeth from shifting out of their proper positions. How do I care for my dental bridges?
Caring for dental bridges involves maintaining excellent oral hygiene. This includes brushing twice daily, flossing daily, and using antiseptic mouthwash to help prevent tooth decay and gum disease. It’s also important to clean under the pontic to remove any food particles. Regular check-ups and cleanings by your dentist are essential to ensure the longevity of your bridge and overall oral health.
