What are dentures?
Dentures are removable dental devices created to replace missing teeth. They are designed to enhance dental health and improve the ability to chew and speak. Composed of a gum-coloured base that fits over your gums and holds artificial teeth, dentures are crafted to look as natural as possible, enhancing both aesthetics and function. What are the different types of dentures?
Dentures come in various forms to cater to different dental needs. Complete dentures are used when all teeth are missing and can be fitted for the top or bottom gum line; they stay in place primarily through suction and may require dental adhesive for additional stability. Partial dentures are ideal for individuals who retain some natural teeth. They fill the gaps and are held in place by clasps that attach to the remaining teeth. Immediate dentures are prepared in advance and can be inserted as soon as the teeth are removed, offering the advantage of never being without teeth. However, they might need more adjustments as the gums heal and shrink. Overdentures, however, provide a more stable and natural feeling as they sit on top of the gums and are anchored to dental implants. How are dentures made?
The process of creating dentures begins with taking initial impressions of your mouth to create accurate moulds that serve as the foundation for a precise model. From these impressions, wax models are crafted and then tried in the mouth to adjust for fit and appearance. Once the wax model is approved, the final denture is cast from more durable materials that mimic the look of natural gums and teeth. After the dentures are fabricated, minor adjustments are often necessary to ensure they are comfortable and fit properly. What happens during a denture fitting?
The denture fitting process is a series of appointments designed to ensure that your new dentures fit comfortably and function effectively. Initially, we will discuss your needs and make preliminary impressions of your jaw and any remaining teeth. Subsequent visits typically involve trying on a trial denture to assess its fit, colour, and shape, allowing for necessary adjustments. Once the dentures are completed, a final session is conducted to ensure they fit well and feel comfortable in your mouth. What are the benefits of dentures?
Dentures offer several benefits:- Improved Appearance: They help restore your facial structure and improve your smile.
- Enhanced Functionality: Dentures allow for better chewing and speech, improving your quality of life.
- Affordable Solution: They are a cost-effective tooth replacement solution compared to other dental procedures like implants.
